Most Calathea species (C. ornata, C. zebrina, C. lancifolia, C. makoyana) prefer consistently moist — not wet — soil and moderate root space. University extension publications from Iowa State and Penn State flag overpotting (choosing a container too large for the root ball) as a common cause of root rot in moisture-loving tropicals, because excess soil stays wet longer than roots can absorb it. A pot without drainage holes traps excess water at the bottom, creating anaerobic conditions that kill fine roots within days. Some growers use a layer of pebbles or activated charcoal in the bottom of a no-drainage pot, believing it creates a reservoir. Neither is inherently better for Calathea. Extension sources note that terracotta can help prevent overwatering in very humid climates or for heavy-handed waterers, but it also wicks moisture away faster in dry indoor environments, which means you must water more often. Calathea species prefer consistently moist soil (not wet, not dry), so a plastic or glazed ceramic pot that holds moisture longer is often more forgiving in low-humidity homes. Terracotta pots also accumulate white salt crust on the outside from fertilizer salts and minerals in tap water. This is cosmetic, but it can indicate salt buildup in the soil, which Calathea roots dislike. You will need to leach the soil every few months by running water through the pot until it drains clear from the bottom.
Look for: If your indoor air is dry (below 40% relative humidity), choose plastic or glazed ceramic to reduce watering frequency. Weight and stability
Calathea foliage is top-heavy. Mature C. orbifolia or C. ‘White Fusion’ plants can have leaves that extend 18 inches from the pot rim, creating a high center of gravity. Terracotta and ceramic pots are heavier and more stable, but they can crack if dropped on tile or hardwood floors.

- Brand name or price above $15 for a standard 6- to 8-inch pot: A $3 plastic nursery pot from a garden center and a $40 designer ceramic pot with drainage perform identically if sized correctly. Pay more only if you value the appearance or craftsmanship.
- “Self-watering” or reservoir pots: These have a built-in water reservoir separated from the soil by a wicking layer or platform. They can work for Calathea, but they introduce complexity: you must monitor the reservoir level, and if the soil mix is not chunky enough, the reservoir keeps the lower roots too wet.
