Most anthurium owners do not need a specialized pot
Most anthurium growers already own a suitable container. A standard nursery pot with drainage holes works for the majority of indoor anthuriums. The plant cares far more about what is inside the pot — a chunky, aerated mix that drains quickly — than the material wrapping the outside.
You do need to pay attention to pot choice if:
- Your home humidity consistently sits below 40 percent and the potting mix dries out in two days or less. Terracotta accelerates evaporation; plastic or glazed ceramic slows it.
- You have a history of overwatering. Terracotta wicks moisture away from roots faster than plastic.
- You want the pot to double as décor and match room aesthetics. Material and finish matter for appearance, not plant health.
- You are repotting a root-bound specimen. Diameter matters: go one to two inches larger than the current root mass, not more.
Extension sources at North Carolina State and University of Illinois consistently emphasize drainage over decorative features. A $3 plastic nursery pot with five drainage holes outperforms a $40 ceramic planter with one center hole if that single hole clogs or drains slowly.
What features actually matter
Drainage holes (non-negotiable)
Anthuriums are epiphytic in origin. Their roots evolved clinging to tree bark in humid Central and South American forests, not sitting in waterlogged substrate. A pot without drainage traps water at the bottom, creating anaerobic conditions that kill roots within days to weeks.
University of Maryland extension notes that even a layer of gravel at the bottom of a drainage-free pot does not prevent root rot. Water still pools; the gravel simply creates a perched water table closer to the roots. One properly sized drainage hole beats any workaround.
Multiple drainage holes — three to five — are better than one. They reduce the chance of a single clog stopping all outflow. Nursery pots typically have four to six; many decorative ceramic pots have one centered hole.

Diameter sized to root mass (not foliage)

Terracotta is porous. Water evaporates through the clay walls as well as the soil surface, drying the root zone faster. This helps if you tend to water on a fixed schedule regardless of soil moisture, or if your climate is very humid and the mix stays wet too long.
Plastic and glazed ceramic are non-porous. Moisture leaves only through the soil surface and drainage holes. The mix stays wetter longer. This suits dry indoor climates (below 40 percent relative humidity) or owners who forget to water and need the buffer of slower evaporation.
Penn State extension suggests matching pot material to your actual behavior, not your intended behavior. If you historically overwater, terracotta provides a margin of error. If you underwater or live in an arid region, plastic retains moisture you need.
Unglazed terracotta develops mineral deposits (white crust) and algae on the exterior over time. Glazed ceramic and plastic do not. Neither affects plant health; it is aesthetic preference.
Look for: Terracotta if you overwater or have high humidity; plastic or glazed ceramic if you underwater or have low humidity.
Weight and stability for top-heavy plants
Mature anthuriums with large leaves can become top-heavy, especially Anthurium andraeanum cultivars with broad spathes. A lightweight plastic pot may tip if the plant leans or if a pet brushes past.
Terracotta and ceramic are denser and less likely to topple. If using plastic for moisture retention, place the nursery pot inside a heavier decorative cache pot, or position the plant where tipping is unlikely (against a wall, on a lower shelf).
Weight also matters if you move plants seasonally. A 10-inch terracotta pot filled with moist chunky mix can weigh 15 to 20 pounds. Plastic of the same size weighs a third as much.
Look for: Heavier materials (terracotta, ceramic) for large or top-heavy specimens; lightweight plastic if you move plants frequently.
Saucer or cache pot to protect surfaces
Drainage holes allow water to exit, which means it needs somewhere to go. A saucer catches runoff and protects furniture. Empty the saucer within 15 to 30 minutes after watering; leaving the pot sitting in water reintroduces the anaerobic conditions drainage is meant to prevent.
A cache pot — a decorative outer container with no drainage — serves the same purpose. Place the nursery pot with drainage inside the cache pot, water in the sink, allow full drainage, then return the plant to the cache pot. Do not water directly into a cache pot unless you tip it to pour out all excess.

What does NOT matter much
- Color. Anthuriums do not care if the pot is white, black, terracotta-orange, or turquoise. Pick what you like visually; the plant responds to light spectrum from above, not reflected light from the pot.
- Self-watering reservoirs. These can work for anthuriums if the potting mix is extremely chunky (50 percent or more bark and perlite). Standard peat-based mixes wick water up from the reservoir and stay too wet. If you already own a self-watering planter and want to try it, monitor the root zone with a finger test weekly.
- Decorative feet or risers built into the pot base. These slightly improve airflow under the pot, which can speed drying in very humid climates. The effect is minor compared to the potting mix itself.
- Brand names and specialty “orchid pots” or “aroid pots.” Generic nursery pots and hardware-store terracotta perform identically if drainage and sizing match. A $25 branded pot and a $2 generic pot with the same features produce the same results.
- Slotted or lattice walls (clear orchid pots). These are marketed for epiphytic orchids to allow light to photosynthetic roots. Anthurium roots do not photosynthesize. The extra airflow from slots can help in extremely humid greenhouses but is unnecessary indoors.

Drainage trumps aesthetics every time. Anthuriums die from root rot far more often than from an ugly pot. A basic terracotta or plastic container with multiple drainage holes, sized one to two inches wider than the root ball, and paired with a chunky aroid mix will outperform any decorative pot that lacks proper drainage.
Material choice — terracotta versus plastic versus ceramic — should follow your actual watering behavior and home humidity, not marketing claims. If you stick your finger in the soil before watering and water only when the top two inches are dry, any well-draining pot works. If you water on autopilot every Sunday regardless of soil moisture, terracotta gives you a safety margin.
Skip the specialized pot if:
- You already have a nursery pot or basic terracotta with drainage. Anthuriums thrive in these; upgrading the pot will not improve growth if the mix and care are already appropriate.
- The decorative pot you want has no drainage hole. Drilling a hole in ceramic is possible with a masonry bit and patience, but skipping the pot entirely is simpler. Use it as a cache pot instead.
- You are choosing a pot three or more inches larger than the root ball “for the plant to grow into.” Anthuriums do not grow faster in oversized pots. They sit in wet soil and develop root problems. Repot only when roots fill the current container.
