Brown Leaf Tips on Houseplants: What Each Pattern Actually Means

Brown leaf tips are one of the most-Googled houseplant problems — and one of the most over-diagnosed. People blame tap water and run out to buy distilled. Extension guidance is clearer: the most likely cause is low humidity, with inconsistent watering, fluoride/chlorine on sensitive species, and soluble salts as other real factors (Iowa State Extension). Match the pattern to the cause

• Just the very tips, on many leaves, in a dry room or near a heater → low humidity. This is the single most common cause (Iowa State Extension).
• Tips + edges, alternating soggy/bone-dry watering → inconsistent watering — fix the rhythm before anything else.
• Sensitive species (spider plant, ti plant, dracaena, prayer plant, calathea) with otherwise reasonable care → tap water: chlorine and fluoride can cause brown tips over time on these (Iowa State Extension). See Tap Water and Houseplants.

The honest “won’t re-green” rule

A leaf that has gone brown at the tip will not return to green there — that tissue is dead. Trim it cleanly if it bothers you. “Fixed” means new growth comes in unblemished and old leaves stop browning further.

Fix it (by cause)

• Low humidity: group plants, use a pebble tray, or run a humidifier. Brief misting doesn’t raise ambient humidity for long.

• Tap water on a sensitive species: switch to rainwater or distilled for that plant — and confirm humidity isn’t the real cause first.
• Salt buildup: leach the pot (plain water flushing through), then fertilize less and weaker.
