Bacterial or fungal leaf spot (less common indoors) produces small, round brown lesions with defined edges, sometimes with a yellow halo, scattered across multiple leaves rather than concentrated at tips or bases.
University of Florida IFAS notes that Ficus species drop leaves rapidly when root systems sit in saturated soil for more than 7–10 days. The brown spotting precedes leaf drop by several days, giving you a narrow intervention window.
Look for: Spot texture (mushy vs. crispy), halo presence, and whether new spots appear on new growth (suggests ongoing watering error) or only old leaves (suggests past stress event).

Pot drainage and saucer water retention
Fiddle leaf figs in pots without drainage holes, or in cache pots where water pools unnoticed beneath the grow pot, develop root rot within 10–14 days of consistent saturation. Check whether your decorative pot has a drainage hole. If not, remove the plant and verify the nursery grow pot inside drains freely. Roots sitting in water — even if the surface soil feels dry — trigger the anaerobic conditions that cause root rot.

Temperature stability and draft exposure
Fiddle leaf figs exposed to temperatures below 55°F for more than 2–3 hours show cold-damage brown spots within 24–48 hours. The browning appears suddenly, often on one side of the plant nearest the cold source (window in winter, air-conditioning vent in summer). What does NOT matter much
- Humidity levels above 40%. Research does not support claims that FLFs require 60%+ humidity to prevent brown spots. Extension sources report Ficus lyrata grows successfully at 40–50% relative humidity. Low humidity may cause brown leaf tips in extremely dry homes (below 30%), but does not cause the large brown spots with halos characteristic of watering or disease issues.
- Fertilizer type or brand. Brown spots are not a nutrient-deficiency symptom. Nitrogen deficiency causes overall yellowing; phosphorus or potassium deficiency causes purpling or pale growth. If brown spots appear, do not add fertilizer — excess fertilizer can worsen root damage if roots are already compromised.
- Leaf-shine products. These do not prevent or treat brown spots. They temporarily mask dust but have no effect on spot development. University of Illinois extension recommends plain water on a soft cloth for leaf cleaning.
- Misting. Misting raises humidity for minutes, not hours, and does not prevent brown spots. It may promote fungal leaf spot if done in evening when leaves stay wet overnight.
- Pot color or material (for existing spots). Ceramic vs. plastic does not affect brown-spot development. Drainage and pot size matter; decorative appearance does not.
Where to verify before buying
If your diagnosis points to watering inconsistency and you cannot reliably assess deep soil moisture, a basic moisture meter removes guesswork for $8–15. If your FLF sits far from windows and shows both brown spots and no new growth in 3+ months, a light meter ($15–30) confirms whether light deficiency is the cause. Most owners do not need a humidifier unless humidity falls below 30% year-round, which is uncommon outside arid climates or forced-air heated homes in winter.
